KAMPALA —
The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has endorsed Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as its preferred candidate for the presidency in the 2032 general elections, setting the stage for a long-term political campaign around his leadership ambitions.
The endorsement signals PLU’s intention to position Gen Muhoozi for the country’s top political office beyond the 2026 electoral cycle.
PLU leaders and supporters have continued to associate Muhoozi with a younger generation of Ugandans, presenting him as a leader capable of taking forward the country’s development agenda while maintaining stability and national unity.
The 2032 endorsement also places renewed focus on the future direction of Uganda’s political landscape, particularly the role of young leaders and emerging political movements.
Supporters argue that Muhoozi’s experience in the security sector and his growing involvement in national affairs give him a foundation from which to pursue a wider political leadership role.
The endorsement, however, is a long-term political declaration, with the 2032 elections still several years away. Much could change within Uganda’s political landscape before then, including alliances, party structures and electoral dynamics.
PLU is expected to use the coming years to strengthen its structures and mobilise support around its political programme and leadership aspirations.
For Muhoozi, the endorsement adds to the growing public discussion about his political future and whether he will eventually seek the presidency.
The development is likely to generate debate within Uganda’s political circles as different parties and political formations position themselves for the country’s future leadership.
With the 2032 presidential race still distant, the PLU endorsement nevertheless represents an early signal of where the movement wants to take its political agenda—and places Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba at the centre of that vision.
