_Kampala, Uganda_ – East Africa’s cultural scene just got louder. Tio Tours and Travel officially launched the inaugural ROUTES·ROOTS Festival early this week, with the first edition now confirmed for 29th October 2026* at Lake Saaka Recreation Center, Fort Portal Tourism City

The announcement positions Fort Portal as the festival’s debut host city, bringing the region’s rich heritage into focus beyond its world-famous wildlife safaris.
Beyond the Safari
While East Africa is globally celebrated for its wildlife and nature tourism, the region’s cultural tourism potential remains underrepresented. ROUTES·ROOTS Festival is designed to change that narrative.

“East Africa is more than the Big Five,” said Ocen Timothy, Managing Director of Tio Tours and Travel, speaking at this week’s launch. “We have centuries of rhythm, flavor, craft, and stories that the world deserves to experience. This event will attract many people from across the globe and locally, and it will promote our food, culture, and tourism in a way that directly benefits our communities.”
What to Expect in Fort Portal – 29th October 2026
Set against the crater lakes and green hills of Fort Portal Tourism City, the one-day launch edition at Lake Saaka Recreation Center will deliver:
– Authentic Cultural Experiences – Live performances, artisan markets, and interactive workshops with Tooro Kingdom craftsmen
– Destination-Based Festival Vibes – The first stop of a traveling celebration set to rotate through Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda
– Diaspora Homecoming Travel – Special welcome packages for East Africans abroad reconnecting with heritage
– Community-Led Tourism Development – Revenue-sharing with local performers, chefs, and cultural groups from the Rwenzori region
Cultural Exchange From Batooro amakondere dancers to Maasai beadwork, Buganda drumming, and Swahili poetry
Visitors can expect a sensory journey: street food alleys serving nyama choma, luwombo, ebihimba, and Zanzibar spices; stages featuring Afro-fusion bands and traditional dance troupes; pop-up galleries of contemporary East African artists; and fireside storytelling sessions with elders under the Fort Portal stars.

Economic & Cultural Impact
Ocen emphasized that the festival isn’t just entertainment. “Every ticket and vendor slot channels money back to the creators. We’re building a platform where local and international visitors experience East Africa through its people, creativity, and heritage — not just through a safari jeep window.”
The Fort Portal debut will feature a _Taste of the EAC_ culinary pavilion, a _Threads & Roots_ fashion showcase with regional designers, and a _Children’s Heritage Village_ to pass traditions to the next generation. The night will close with a headline concert blending traditional Tooro instruments with modern beats.
