KAMPALA —
A Shs2.25 billion dividend paid to businessman Sudhir Ruparelia by Bank of Baroda Uganda has drawn attention to the potential of long-term equity investments to generate substantial returns for shareholders.
Ruparelia, the chairman of Ruparelia Group, received the dividend after Bank of Baroda Uganda reported strong financial results for the year ended December 31, 2025.
The lender declared a dividend of Shs6 per share, up from Shs4 per share the previous year, signalling an increased distribution to shareholders following improved profitability.
Ruparelia is reported to own about 375.16 million shares in the bank, representing approximately 2.5 per cent of its equity. At the approved dividend rate, his holding generated Shs2,250,981,000 in dividend income.
The payout illustrates how substantial shareholdings in profitable companies can provide investors with recurring income without necessarily selling their underlying assets.
Bank of Baroda Uganda recorded profit after tax of about Shs156.8 billion in 2025, supporting the decision by shareholders to approve the higher dividend at the bank’s Annual General Meeting.
For Uganda’s capital markets, the development also underscores the importance of listed companies in providing investment opportunities to individuals and institutions seeking both income and long-term wealth creation.
Ruparelia’s investment in Bank of Baroda Uganda is part of a broader portfolio that includes interests in real estate, hospitality, education and other businesses.
The dividend comes at a time when investors are increasingly looking at ways of diversifying their portfolios beyond traditional businesses and assets.
Rather than relying solely on capital appreciation, dividend-paying shares can offer investors an additional source of income while allowing them to retain ownership of their investments.
The Bank of Baroda Uganda payout therefore puts the spotlight not only on Ruparelia’s earnings, but also on the wider potential of Uganda’s stock market to reward investors who maintain significant positions in profitable listed companies.
