KCCA has held a high-level meeting with the Architects Registration Board and other stakeholders aimed at improving efficiency in the issuance of building permits and approval of building plans in Kampala.
The meeting resolved to strengthen regular engagement between KCCA, architects, engineers, and developers to ensure smoother operations and faster approval processes.
According to the Director of Engineering at Kampala Capital City Authority Eng justus Akankwasa the law requires KCCA to issue building permits within 30 days, but delays have continued to affect developers and architects.
He noted that poor coordination and communication between developers and architects have also contributed to the slow process, affecting service delivery within the construction sector.
Officials also discussed the need for greater efficiency and professionalism in the sector, with KCCA warning that individuals involved in irregularities during the building approval process will face punishment under the current building laws.
KCCA further raised concern over the increasing number of substandard architects and engineers whose poor work has contributed to cases of building collapse in the city.
The Chairperson of the Architects Registration Board, Miriam Ssembatya, said the meeting follows several complaints from architects regarding delays in service delivery and approval procedures.
She emphasized that under the Building Control Act, it is a serious offence for developers to begin construction without an approved building plan and official permit.
The board also warned individuals masquerading as professional architects, revealing that new measures have been introduced to crack down on illegal practitioners operating in the sector.
Meanwhile, stakeholders welcomed plans to digitalise the issuance of building permits, saying the move will improve transparency, reduce delays, and enhance efficiency in service.
