Sironko Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Asha Mafabi has tabled a motion calling on Government to improve access to geriatric healthcare and strengthen social protection for older persons in Uganda.
Mafabi said Uganda’s population of people aged 60 and above is estimated at more than 1.4 million and continues to grow, creating an urgent need for better health and social support services for the elderly.
She noted that older persons face a disproportionate burden of non-communicable and age-related diseases, yet access to specialised geriatric healthcare remains limited.
Mafabi urged Government to strengthen healthcare services for older persons and enhance social protection programmes to improve their wellbeing and dignity.
She said addressing the needs of the elderly should be treated as a national priority as Uganda’s ageing population continues to increase.
