KAMPALA —
Uganda’s Indian business community is preparing for India Day 2026 with a focus that goes beyond cultural celebration, highlighting the community’s contribution to investment, employment and humanitarian initiatives in Uganda.
The October 3 event is expected to bring together business leaders, entrepreneurs and members of the Indian community as they celebrate the longstanding ties between Uganda and India.
Among the business figures being recognised for their contribution to Uganda’s private sector is businessman and philanthropist Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, whose business journey has been cited by fellow Indian entrepreneurs as an example of long-term investment in Uganda.
Through the Ruparelia Group, Dr Sudhir has built interests in areas including real estate, hospitality and education, while the group is also among the corporate supporters of this year’s India Day celebrations.
Organising Committee Chairman Paresh Mehta has acknowledged the contribution of sponsors and partners supporting the event, including Ruparelia Group, Victoria University, Bank of Baroda, Tyre Express, Tembo Steels, Technology Associates, Empile Casino and Britannia.
However, organisers say the significance of this year’s celebration will extend beyond business and entertainment.
A major humanitarian component has been incorporated into the event, with proceeds expected to support about 160 heart surgeries for children below five years and approximately 1,000 cataract surgeries for people in need across Uganda.
The initiative highlights the growing role of private-sector and community partnerships in supporting social programmes alongside commercial investment.
The Indian Association Uganda says the Indian community has been part of Uganda’s history since 1904, making India Day an opportunity to reflect on its contribution to the country’s economic and social development.
For entrepreneurs within the community, the story of established investors such as Dr Sudhir also reflects a broader shift from short-term trading to long-term investment, with Indian-owned enterprises now active in sectors ranging from manufacturing and property to hospitality, education and technology.
The 2026 celebration will also feature Indian singer Neha Kakkar, who is expected to headline the entertainment programme.
With business, culture and humanitarian activities brought together, India Day 2026 is expected to provide a platform for the Indian community to celebrate its heritage while highlighting its continuing economic and social engagement in Uganda.
For Dr Sudhir and the Ruparelia Group, the event also represents another opportunity to support initiatives linking business investment with wider community interests.
