Uganda’s tourism industry has once again highlighted the critical role of private sector investment after businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia was recognised with the Silverback Award for his contribution to the country’s hospitality sector.
The recognition, presented during the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) Annual Tourism Banquet at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, underscored how long-term investment in hotels, conference facilities and tourism infrastructure continues to shape Uganda’s position as a leading destination for business and leisure travel.
Over the years, private investors have played a significant role in expanding the country’s accommodation capacity, creating employment opportunities and attracting international conferences and events. Among the most notable contributors is the Ruparelia Group, whose investments include Speke Resort Munyonyo, Speke Hotel, Kabira Country Club, Forest Cottages and Dolphin Suites.
Industry players say such investments have strengthened Uganda’s ability to host high-profile regional and international meetings, boosting tourism revenues while supporting local businesses that depend on the hospitality value chain.
The Silverback Award is also seen as recognition of the broader impact of sustained private investment in tourism, an industry regarded as one of Uganda’s key economic drivers.
Stakeholders at the banquet noted that continued collaboration between government and private investors will be essential in improving tourism infrastructure, enhancing service standards and increasing Uganda’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.
Dr. Ruparelia’s recognition comes at a time when Uganda is seeking to attract more international visitors and position itself as a preferred destination for meetings, conferences, exhibitions and leisure tourism, with industry leaders expressing optimism that continued investment will further accelerate the sector’s growth.
