Security operatives have arrested a key suspect believed to have participated in the brutal mob attack that led to the death of Sydney Gongodyo, a professional rugby player and Makerere University student.
The suspect, identified as Obed, a boda-boda rider, was apprehended on Monday as investigations into the tragic incident continue.
Gongodyo, 27, was allegedly attacked by a mob in Upper Naguru, Nakawa Division, Kampala, on June 5 after being accused of snatching a mobile phone. He later succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.
The arrest of Obed marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigations and has been welcomed by family, friends, and members of the sporting fraternity who have been demanding justice for the slain rugby player.
Police have already arrested several other suspects in connection with the incident, and security agencies say efforts are underway to track down additional individuals who participated in the mob action.
Authorities have condemned acts of mob justice, warning members of the public against taking the law into their own hands. They have urged citizens to hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
Investigations into the murder remain ongoing as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Gongodyo’s death.
