Ruparelia Defends Private Sector’s Role in Building Uganda’s Economy

Ruparelia Defends Private Sector’s Role in Building Uganda’s Economy

By Joseph muyingo

Ruparelia Group Chairman Sudhir Ruparelia has argued that Uganda’s economic conversation should focus less on who owns businesses and more on who creates jobs, pays taxes and drives long-term investment.

Speaking during a discussion at Crane Chambers, the veteran businessman reflected on entrepreneurship, investment and the changing face of Uganda’s economy, insisting that business success should ultimately be measured by impact.

Ruparelia challenged the perception that entrepreneurs of Asian origin dominate economic opportunities at the expense of local communities, saying their businesses have instead created thousands of jobs for Ugandans.

According to him, employment generation remains one of the strongest contributions the private sector can make to national development.

“I’m employing over ten thousand people,” he said, adding that investment should be viewed through the opportunities it creates for workers, suppliers and communities.

He noted that Uganda’s Asian community remains relatively small compared to the country’s total population but has maintained a strong presence in sectors such as manufacturing, hospitality and services.

For Ruparelia, sustained investment in productive sectors has played a role in supporting industrial growth and expanding economic activity.

He also placed emphasis on tax compliance, describing taxation as an essential obligation of responsible business.

Ruparelia said businesses must contribute to government revenue because taxes support public services and national development. He outlined the significant tax obligations handled across companies under the Ruparelia Group and said disciplined financial management remains central to maintaining growth.

Beyond numbers, Ruparelia spoke about the principles that have guided his business journey.

He said successful enterprises require professional systems, accountability and allowing managers to focus on delivering results rather than becoming overwhelmed by administrative processes.

Using education as an example, he argued that teachers should focus on teaching while structured management systems handle operational responsibilities.

Ruparelia also reflected on entrepreneurship as a personal journey, saying he only invests in areas that genuinely interest him.

According to him, passion and consistency matter as much as capital.

The discussion extended beyond business to his public role as Nepal’s Honorary Consul in Uganda, which he described as voluntary service aimed at supporting Nepali citizens and strengthening bilateral relations.

Looking at Uganda’s broader economic picture, Ruparelia said the country has made visible progress over recent decades through industrial growth, infrastructure expansion and increased local production.

He pointed to the growing number of factories and locally manufactured goods as signs of economic maturity and argued that Uganda’s future depends on encouraging more investment across sectors.

The conversation closed on a personal note as Ruparelia reflected on his late son, Rajiv Ruparelia, describing him as a young leader whose influence continues to be felt across business and society.

For Ruparelia, Uganda’s development story remains rooted in entrepreneurship, discipline and long-term investment — values he believes can continue shaping opportunities for future generations.
