Victoria University Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Muganga has paid tribute to the late businessman Rajiv Ruparelia, crediting his vision and belief in the institution with helping shape its growth and ambition to transform higher education in Uganda.
Speaking during the university’s 10th graduation ceremony at Speke Resort Munyonyo, Muganga recalled how Rajiv supported the institution during its early years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when universities faced significant operational challenges.
Muganga said Rajiv saw potential in Victoria University when its student population stood at about 180, encouraging its leadership to look beyond immediate challenges and pursue a more ambitious future.
He described the late businessman as a visionary whose confidence in the university and its staff helped strengthen their determination to expand the institution and compete with leading universities across Africa and beyond.
Rajiv’s contribution to Victoria University was also associated with promoting practical learning, innovation and education that responds to the changing demands of the job market.
As the institution celebrates a decade of academic development, Muganga’s tribute has renewed attention to Rajiv’s role in shaping its direction and the challenge of sustaining his vision through relevant academic programmes, technological innovation and practical skills development.
Muganga also announced plans for a new Victoria University campus in Naguru, Kampala, with construction expected to begin in January 2027. The proposed facility is expected to support technology-driven learning and include a teaching hospital as part of plans to establish a medical school.
Rajiv Ruparelia died in a road accident on May 3, 2025, aged 35. His contribution to education continues to feature in discussions about Victoria University’s growth and the role of private investment in expanding higher education opportunities in Uganda.
