The swearing-in ceremony follows the January 15, 2026 general elections in which Ugandans elected new legislators to represent them in Parliament for the next five years.
Activities at Parliament started early in the morning with a ceremonial performance by the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) Band.
At exactly 8:00am, the band played both the Uganda National Anthem and the East African Anthem as Members-elect, dignitaries, family members and invited guests gathered for the historic occasion.
Five minutes later, the Clerk to Parliament officially opened the ceremony by reading the Proclamation and citing the constitutional and legal provisions that mandate him to administer oaths to Members-elect before they assume office.
The first legislator to take oath was Enos Asiimwe Kinywamachunda, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Member-elect for Kabula County in Lyantonde District.
Kinywamachunda stepped onto the podium and took both the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament as stipulated under the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Uganda.
The swearing-in exercise is expected to continue with all Members-elect taking oath before the official commencement of parliamentary business in the new House.
The atmosphere around Parliament Building remained lively as supporters, cultural performers and well-wishers celebrated the beginning of a new parliamentary term, with security heavily deployed to ensure a smooth exercise.
The 12th Parliament is expected to tackle key national issues including economic growth, service delivery, youth unemployment and legislative reforms during its tenure.
