Sironko District Woman Member of Parliament Asha Nabulo Mafabi has called for stronger parliamentary oversight of water and sanitation projects, warning that many government interventions risk failing when they are not properly supervised.
Mafabi said MPs have a responsibility to go beyond legislation and representation by ensuring that public projects in their constituencies are implemented as planned and deliver the intended services to communities.
She noted that inadequate supervision can undermine investments in water and sanitation, leaving communities without the benefits of projects despite government resources having been committed.
According to Mafabi, effective oversight should involve MPs monitoring projects from implementation to completion, engaging technical teams and following up on challenges that could affect their sustainability.
She urged fellow legislators to meet their part of the oversight responsibility by regularly checking on government projects and demanding accountability where implementation falls short.
Mafabi said stronger monitoring would help protect public investments, improve service delivery and ensure that communities benefit from water and sanitation programmes.
Her remarks come amid continued efforts by government and development partners to expand access to safe water and improve sanitation services across the country.
